PCPS NUTRITIONAL SERVICES AWARDED A SHARE OUR STRENGTH’S NO KID HUNGRY TEST KITCHEN GRANT

Innovative partnership with Page County hopes to feed more children this summer

LURAY, VA ―
Supervisor of Nutritional Services, Virginia Jeffries, was informed earlier this month that her department’s proposal for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Test Kitchen was one of four (4) selected nationwide in this year’s grant cycle.

The Test Kitchen is a concept accelerator designed to help nonprofits, schools, faith organizations, and local governments turn their best ideas into validated strategies and promising practices. Now in its second year, this year’s focus is on ending childhood hunger in rural communities in the summer. Selected teams will receive grant funds and technical assistance to support a pilot to test their idea and have the opportunity to build relationships with other innovative organizations at an in-person planning retreat. Selected organizations will receive $10,000 and technical assistance from No Kid Hungry to testa new model, strategy, or program designed to reach more kids in rural communities with food in the summer.

Page County Public Schools Nutritional Services proposed a partnership between the school division, Page County Sheriff’s Office, and Page County Department of Fire-EMS. In order to try to feed more children this summer, the grant monies will be used to pack shelf-stable meals to be distributed out of county vehicles. At the planning retreat scheduled in April, team members will work with staff from No Kid Hungry’s Program Innovation team to discuss the pilot idea, planning, and evaluation.
