care closets

For Immediate Release: October 18, 2023

LURAY, Va. ― The Communities in Schools (CiS) grant is designed to support school divisions in the development and implementation of community schools that provide a framework for integrated student support, expanded/enriched learning time and opportunities, active family/community engagement, and collaborative leadership and practices. Funding for this grant is provided by the 2022 Virginia General Assembly Communities in Schools Fund.

Page County Public Schools (PCPS) is pleased to announce that we are the recipient of a Communities in Schools (CiS) grant. PCPS will use this grant awarded to decrease the chronic absenteeism rate, engage families, and support the mental and physical needs of students and families. PCPS is one of only 14 school divisions across the state to be awarded this grant. The grant runs from March of 2023 through June of 2024.

The CiS grant will support activities such as:

  • Community School Coordinators (at the school level)

  • Instructors for the student/parent drug class

  • Family Engagement activities

  • Clothing/Hygiene cosets at each school

  • Food Pantries at each school

  • Calming Corners/Self-Care Materials and Supplies (at the school level)

  • Survey and Data Collection Tools

  • Professional Development at conferences, workshops, materials and supplies

As the CiS grant has provided the start-up for each school’s Clothing/Hygiene closet, PCPS is reaching out to those in our community who can assist us in ensuring the longevity of these closets within each school. The following items will be accepted and can be dropped off at the front office of EACH school.

  • Personal hygiene items to include toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and feminine products

  • Gently Used or New clothing items (free of stains or tears) such as pants, shorts, shirts, hoodies, jackets and coats. PLEASE– NO USED SOCKS, SHOES, OR UNDERWEAR

  • We WILL accept NEW socks, shoes, and underwear

  • All items will need to be age appropriate according to the school to which it is donated

PCPS is proud to be the one of the fourteen schools across the state included in this grant, and with your help we look forward to continuing to provide items for our students that will help improve their emotional and physical well-being. If you have any further questions regarding this opportunity, please contact the School Community Coordinator at the school with which you desire to assist.
