Students in Ms. Getz’s 12th grade US/VA Government classes at Luray High School initiated the DAV Field of Flags fund raising campaign as stated on our webpage:
“Luray High School Class of 2026 is proud to participate in DAV’s Field of Flags because it empowers our Bulldog community to honor local veterans and raise critical funds to support our ill and injured heroes. The flags represent our veterans and our unwavering commitment to serve them after all they’ve sacrificed for our country. With a donation of $10.00 or more a flag will be planted in honor of your veteran. All donations raise critical funds to support DAV’s life-changing services for veterans in need and their families. Funds raised through Field of Flags supports DAV's mission of keeping their promise to veterans, their families, and survivors. Just as America's service members fought for us, DAV fights for them. DAV assists veterans by helping them gain access to the medical, financial, and educational benefits they've earned along with connecting them to meaningful employment opportunities. All services are provided free of charge. ”
Students thought of creating name tags to be planted next to the flags which will encourage people to take tours of the flags, recognize members of the community who served, and thus spread appreciation for our local heroes. Ms. Getz and her government classes are hosting a celebration on Veteran’s Day beginning at 12:30 p.m. All veterans and their families are invited to tour the flags and take part in a ceremony honoring the flag, meet LHS students who will present thank you notes to the veterans, and enjoy refreshments.
The seniors originally set a goal of $1000 which was literally met in the first 3 days, so we changed it to $2000 and surpassed the second goal with $2140! This translates into a field of over 200 flags which will be planted on the campus bank surrounding the LHS rock garden as you enter the school. The Luray love for our beloved veterans has been truly amazing!
